[ with the meeting adjourned, whatever the result, one thing is painfully clear.
arashi narukami never showed up.
a social butterfly like her would certainly have been the first in the door, as HiMERU had said; she wouldn't have missed it, nor buzzing around town in her usual form, as tsukasa thought. the only lead they had came from yodaka (kaname), who'd claimed he hadn't seen her since the 23rd, a day after crow's body had been found and two before the meeting, and that she had perhaps "wandered too far out of town" to find the murderer they'd been after in the first place.
maybe, maybe not. arashi'd know it would be dangerous to go alone, but it was far too apparent to tsukasa that she wasn't in town at all.
the forest to the south is burned thoroughly, but it's still too dangerous. she wouldn't have thought to look there for anything at all.
past the railway, the orchard is similarly scorched. there's fissures here and there, snaking through the trees and swallowing others up. the church past it is sinking, the void pulling it down in its hunger, and it would be at the line where they meet that the two would find any evidence of something off:
tsukasa steps on it, eager to find his senior, and beneath his foot lies a near-full bag of apple crisps from a local cafe in town. rather than it have been set down, it seems as if it's been thrown in a panic.
insects are included in the sparse wildlife of the island, tsukasa must be so thankful, so there's no ants on it -- but it is stale, as if it's been there a few days. it does beg the question of why it was here though, more or less untouched, and who left it. ]
[ There has been no luck anywhere, and the lack of progress leaves him feeling sick to his stomach and discouraged. He truly feels exhausted after walking what feels like thousands of miles, his feet sore and legs tired. But it is the worry and panic that carry him forward. No one has seen Narukami. There's nothing outside of the town limits, and truly he's combed the town itself.
. . . Still. She can't have just vanished.
It is the sound of something crunching beneath his feet that drags him from his frustrated and tired thoughts.]
Hmm...?
[ He moves his foot away and bends down to pick it up. Apple crisps? ]
Littering...? When someone is this close to the void?
[ They could have just tossed it in. Not that he thinks that is any better. People ought to dispose of things properly. It's not courteous otherwise. ]
What an uncultured person.
[ He picks the bag up, peering inside. ]
It doesn't look as though they ate very much, either?
[ A litterer and a food waster. That's literally the worst. ]
[HiMERU holds his hand out for Tsukasa to pass the bag over, so that he can look at it too. ... He's seen these before.]
These are from one of the cafes in town...
[Not one he's frequented personally, but a passing recommendation from Kaname, who he's seen eating them.
There's considerable foot traffic here at the church, or at least there was before; since it served as their crossing, tens of them would pass back and forth daily, but it's noticeably dropped what with the further destruction of the church itself and the disheartening lay of the land, not to mention the worsening weather. That is to say, there would be even fewer people this could've belonged to.]
If we're looking for witnesses this far out, it may be worth visiting the cafe and asking who's purchased these in the last few days.
[ He passes them over for hiMERU to take, moving a little further back from the area around the void. It doesn't seem like there is anything else of interest, here, and considering how fast things are falling into its depths, he isn't really content on lingering too long, either.]
I have been to a couple of the cafes in town. If the owners are still around... at the very least, I believe I have a good rapport with them.
[ just as tsukasa steps back, though, there's a glint of... something silver by the side of the church, more visible as the wind moves the grass around.
and if tsukasa doesn't notice it, HiMERU certainly might -- regardless, it's going to be something familiar to them both, if they dare to move closer to the ever encroaching void. it hasn't hit the glint yet, but in a day's time it might.
[There's a lot to be said about anyone or anything being found still this close to the void. But what's it going to do, bite him? He's taken it on by the horns before and lived to tell the tale. Even for Tsukasa, this isn't his first rodeo with the bottomless black.
Also... HiMERU has a brain. There are trees still by this church, burned to near a crisp and several felled by the by the upturned earth, but that makes it all the easier to sift through the debris and find a sizable stick. He barely so much as tosses a glance over his shoulder at the other before following the source.
Not every set piece is a clue, and not every shimmer is a star — sometimes it is just a flashlight — but they will reach for most anything if they can take it at this point, determined as they are to find some kind of trace of the gone girl.
So, when he circles the crooked side of the church and sharpens the eyes for that glint, HiMERU uses his stick (just a few bad nights away from becoming charcoal) to pinpoint the reflected light, and carefully drag it away from the void and towards their side of safety.]
[ it takes a few tries, but eventually successful in his efforts HiMERU can see that it is a higher quality kitchen knife on the smaller side, not unlike one owned by a chef proper over something a housewife might use...
... with some sort of dark crimson flaking off it as it runs agaisnt the ground. it isn't a lot, more of a line against the blade rather than coating it like it would if it stabbed someone, but it is very much there.
[ He turns back, and he cannot help the little bit of apprehension he feels as HiMERU begins fishing for an object. Drawing near again, his hand hovers around him, in case he should lose his footing or need a quick pull.
He frowns as the object-- a knife, as it turns out, is dragged nearer them, eyes squinting as the older idol gathers it up.]
. . . Is that blood?
[ . . . It isn't covered. It certainly doesn't feel like some sort of crime has taken place here.
. . . At least outwardly. Though he can't help but be reminded of the knife that was buried in the center of Crow's chest. ]
[A soft snort, not entirely free of disdain.] And who would do that?
[A hypothetical question, of course. Not him. Definitely not Tsukasa. Certainly not any other desperate and miserable rocks-for-brains saps to be found around here.
HiMERU holds the blade to the light, frowning at the threads of dried blood. Perhaps the blade is a romantic choice when it comes to bleeding for bleeding's sake, but it still seems like an inelegant solution to him overall.]
The make of this is too professional, meaning it likely didn't come from a home kitchen. Pilfered or brought from a commercial kitchen. Either a restaurant, then, or...
[A side-glance at Tsukasa. He doesn't have to spell it out, right?]
I guess I could always ask HiMERU-chan... He and I have been talking so much lately, so I'm sure he wouldn't have any problem helping me out... ( lays her hand on her cheek thoughtfully... ) But since we've been getting soooo comfy with one another, who knows what kind of things I might let slip...
[ ugh. come in. he's shutting the door behind her and then going to sit down on his bed. to note, his room isn't particularly... personalized. there's some sewing stuff around. but it's very much the room of someone who doesn't plan to stay long, in a sense. ]
What is it you're doing? Some sort of contest? I don't know the first thing about poetry, but I'll learn.
( she'll get as cozy with your brother as he'll let her, thanks
but also thanks, she's coming in! hm... he needs to work on this... it reminds her, a bit, of HiMERU's side of their room back home. )
I'm doing a whole lot of things, actually, but the only part of it you have to worry about is the poetry competition... I thought you'd be perfect as a judge! There'll be two others, so you won't be alone or anything like that...
( she's done circling his room, she'll just stand by his door now, hands on her hips. hmmm! )
And it's definitely something only you can do. I even designed the outfit with you in mind!
well. unfortunately narukami really knows how to hook him, because he was going to ask why him of all people (when he barely understands being in love outside the framework others give him, when romance is the one he's least familiar with, when his first went so horribly) when she goes ahead and says that it's something only he can do. now it doesn't matter why it's him. only that it can only be him, and kaname is obviously pleased. ]
Is that so? I'd like to see it then. I had an outfit being designed for me back home, so I'd love to see what you have in mind.
Weeell, it's obviously gotta be themed for the festival...
( she flicks through her phone—of course she took pics of her designs!!—and hands it off to him. don't go through her other pics she is trusting you. also YOU know what they look like bc you picked them out so i'm not linking them /lazy )
I think I'll make the dress a little longer, or a little more modest or something, but that's the general idea for the both of us! Totally hosty, right?
